Basic EXTERIOR DETAIL & Light POLISH/CORRECTION

Preserving heritage

Happy Friday from all of us at Superior Detailer! To kick off the weekend, we're featuring a short but sweet post on this charming vintage red 1961 Porsche 356 Type B. A symbol of post-war performance and timeless design, this classic coupe came to us showing signs of its age—not through neglect, but through well-meaning but improper care. The iconic red, single-stage paint had become hazy with swirl marks and fine scratches, mostly from quick wipe-downs over time. Unlike today’s modern multi-stage paint systems, this vintage finish is far softer and more delicate—requiring precision, restraint, and a deep respect for originality during the correction process.

Here's a short list of what we did:

Exterior Handwash & DECONTAMINATION - A GENTLE REFRESH

We started with a basic exterior detail, priced at $85 — but it's a process that’s anything but basic when applied to a vehicle like this. After a thick foam cannon soak, we performed a double-bucket hand wash to lift away surface grime without introducing new scratches. This careful prep step ensured that no contaminants would interfere with the correction work that followed.

LIGHT MACHINE POLISH & Minor Paint CORRECTION

With the surface cleaned, we restored the 356B's original sheen and hue by beginning our light polish/correction process, using a dual-action machine polisher and a low-abrasive polish designed for sensitive, single-stage paint. If you look closely in the above photos, you can see the minor imperfections, streaks/wipe marks, and light surface scratches, which we then carefully removed - revealing the rich, warm depth hidden beneath years of wear.

Our team worked panel by panel, balancing cutting power with precision to avoid overworking the original finish. The result? A vibrant, uniform gloss that revived the factory-correct color without compromising the car’s authenticity.

The FINAL RESULT: AN OLD-WORLD CLASSIC REVITALIZED WITH MODERN-DAY CARE

Take a look at these stunning final photos:

Why THIS MATTERS: CLASSIC PAINT NEEDS SPECIALIZED CARE

Unlike modern clear-coated paint, single-stage finishes are unforgiving and easy to damage. They're essentially harder to work with and the exact finishes, processes, and products used in the original factory construction are harder to pinpoint, making it especially important to handle these cars with care. Every wipe-down, every polish, and every product choice matters. If left unchecked, surface defects can permanently alter the car’s original paint—and with collector vehicles like this, originality is value.

That’s why careful correction and preservation are essential—not just for aesthetics, but for maintaining the car’s long-term integrity and resale potential. It’s not just about making the paint look good today—it’s about protecting what makes this car special tomorrow.

IT'S THE LITTLE THINGS

This Porsche 356 didn’t need a full overhaul—just skilled hands, the right tools, and a deep understanding of what makes vintage paintwork unique. This project just goes to show that sometimes minor TLC can go a long way - even if there aren't major defects - in order to prevent little problems from becoming bigger. It's also crucial that clients are educated/knowledgeable on maintaining proper routine care practices at home using the right products and techniques to prolong wear between shop visits.

If you’re caring for a vintage or specialty car, trust a team that understands the nuances and needs behind each surface. At Superior Detailer, we don’t just detail—we preserve history.

Need an expert's eye? Searching for a shop that caters toward vintage cars, not just the latest and greatest? Rest assured, Superior Detailer's respect for automobiles transcends modernity and our services are just as timeless as they are effective. We gladly tailor our detail packages for whatever your car needs while being careful to maintain the original integrity - whether it's old or new. We take pride in being able to serve everyone and every car - because everyone deserves outstanding, luxury car care.
